I, Captain return with "The News", a compact EP that feels less like a headline grab and more like a late-night broadcast tuned just off the dial. Across four tracks, the band stitches together grit, groove, and attitude, creating a release that thrives on its raw edges. It’s a project that doesn’t ask for attention—it earns it through feel, texture, and an unfiltered sense of momentum. Sonically, the EP leans into a looser, more blues-soaked palette than some of I, Captain’s earlier work. Funk rhythms rub shoulders with rock swagger, while punk instincts keep everything sharp and restless. The low-fi character remains intact, but it now feels warmer and more lived-in, like music recorded with the doors open and the amps turned just a little too high.

There’s an easy confidence here, even when the sound veers into rough terrain. What makes "The News" particularly compelling is its sense of rediscovery. These songs, once without a clear destination, now feel purposeful when grouped together. Rather than sounding like leftovers, they come across as snapshots from different moments that unexpectedly form a coherent narrative. Each track adds a new shade to the EP’s character, expanding its emotional and stylistic range without overstaying its welcome. At the heart of the release is a simple but powerful motivation: a genuine love for making music. That spirit runs through every riff and rhythm change, giving the EP an unpretentious charm.

There’s no grand concept or forced message here—just musicians leaning into what feels good, trusting that honesty to carry the songs forward. "The News" stands out because it dares to shift course without losing identity. It’s a brief but satisfying journey that shows I, Captain experimenting with tone and scope while staying grounded in their DIY roots. For listeners, it’s an invitation to spend a few minutes inside the band’s evolving sound world—and to come away wanting another broadcast soon.
